The residential HVAC industry has entered a new phase. For over 20 years, R410A has been the standard refrigerant in HVAC systems, replacing R22 due to its ozone-depleting properties. But now, the industry is shifting once again.
Since January 1, 2025, new air conditioners and heat pumps imported into Canada are being built with lower-impact refrigerants, specifically R32 and R-454B. This change is part of a global effort to reduce hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) emissions by 85% by 2036.
Why the Industry Is Moving Away from R410A
While R410A does not harm the ozone layer, it has a high Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 2,088, which contributes significantly to climate change.
In comparison:
- R32 has a GWP of 675
- R-454B has a GWP of 466
These refrigerants are far less damaging to the environment and align with global climate targets. Since most HVAC systems used in Canada are manufactured elsewhere, this transition is already being seen across the country.
What This Means for Homeowners
- You Don’t Need to Replace a Working System
If your HVAC system uses R410A and is still operating efficiently, there’s no need to upgrade. The updated refrigerant rules only apply to newly manufactured systems. - R410A Will Remain Available
R410A is still being produced for servicing and repairs. Homeowners can continue to maintain their existing systems using R410A. - New Systems Will Use Different Refrigerants
When your system eventually needs replacing, expect your new unit to run on R32 or R-454B. These alternatives are quickly becoming the standard in North America due to their environmental and performance advantages. - It’s a Good Time to Start Planning
If your HVAC system is over 15 years old, now is a smart time to begin considering an upgrade. New systems offer better energy efficiency, more consistent performance, and future-ready refrigerants.
The Big Picture
The shift to R32 and R-454B is part of an industry-wide move toward sustainability. There’s no urgent need to replace your current system if it’s working well, but when the time comes, your next system will likely use one of these newer refrigerants.
They’re not just better for the environment, they’re also a smart long-term investment in home comfort and efficiency.
