Heat Pump Rebate

  • The home must have a residential FortisBC or municipal electricity account of Grand Forks, Penticton, Summerland or Nelson Hydro.
  • If the registered owner of the property, where upgrades were made, is not the utility account holder (e.g. landlord/tenant) the owner must have the account holder complete the Utility Account Holder Consent form.
  • The home must be a year-round primary residence, at least 12 months old, and be a single-family, duplex, row home, townhouse or mobile home on permanent foundation. 
  • Heat pump must be NEEP cold-climate certified, installed by a qualified contractor, and sized properly via a heat load calculation using CSA F280-12 verified software.
  • Heat pump must provide primary heating to the majority of finished living space.
  • Application must be submitted within six months of invoice date.
  • Only one rebate per home for the primary space heating system is allowed.
  1. Apply online within six months of your invoice date with the following information:
    • Your FortisBC electricity account number or municipal electricity account number from Grand Forks, Penticton, Summerland or Nelson Hydro
    • Your email
    • Invoices for heat pump rebates must also include the following information; see a sample invoice for heat pumps:
      • AHRI reference number or copy of AHRI certificate
      • Number of tons
      • Indication that a variable speed compressor has been installed (required for mini-split, multi-split and central, tier 2)
  2. If you’re not the utility account holder (e.g. property is a rental), have the account holder complete the consent form.
  3. Applications may take up to 90 days to process.

Heat Pump Service Rebate

Receive $50 when your heat pump is serviced by a qualified contractor.

  • Must be a residential FortisBC or municipal electricity customer of Grand Forks, Summerland, Penticton, Nelson Hydro.
  • Rebate application must be within 60 days of service invoice date.
  1. Have your heat pump serviced under program terms.
  2. Apply online within 60 days of your heat pump service, submitting your service invoice and required details.
  3. FortisBC electricity customers will receive a rebate as a bill credit. Municipal electricity customers of Grand Forks, Penticton, Summerland and Nelson will receive a rebate cheque. May take up to 90 days.

Heat Pump Water Heater Rebate

Receive a rebate of $1,000 when you replace your standard electric storage tank water heater with a qualifying high-efficiency electric heat pump model. Receive $300 two-upgrade bonus if you complete an additional eligible home renovation upgrade.

  1. Your home must have a residential FortisBC natural gas account and/or a residential FortisBC or municipal electricity account (Grand Forks, Penticton, Summerland, or Nelson Hydro)
  2. If the registered owner of the property where upgrades were made is not the utility account holder (e.g. a landlord/tenant scenario), the owner must have the account holder complete the Utility Account Holder Consent form.
  3. The home must be a year-round primary residence at least 12 months old. Eligible dwelling types include single-family, duplex, triplex, row home, townhouse, or mobile home on a permanent foundation. New construction, additions, and garage upgrades are not eligible. 
  4. Applications must be submitted within six months of the paid invoice date.
  5. Rebates cannot exceed the paid cost on the invoice.
  6. Only one rebate per home is allowed for a primary water heating system.

Water Heater–Specific Eligibility:

  • The existing water heater being replaced must be a standard electric storage tank model in working order.
  • Replacing an existing heat pump water heater is not eligible.
  1. Work with your contractor to select an eligible heat pump water heater. 
  2. Apply online within six months of your invoice date with the following:
     • Your FortisBC electricity account number or applicable municipal electricity account number (Grand Forks, Penticton, Summerland, Nelson)
     • Your email address
     • Scanned copies of all paid invoices detailing the work: purchase date, make, model, installation permit number if applicable
     • If you are not the utility account holder, include the signed Utility Account Holder Consent form
  3. Allow up to 90 days for application processing.

Heat Pump Loan

Borrow up to $6,500 at 1.9% interest rate over a 10-year term when you switch from electric baseboards or an electric furnace to a qualifying high-efficiency air source heat pump.

  • You must be a residential FortisBC or municipal electricity customer (Grand Forks, Penticton, Summerland, or Nelson Hydro).
  • Your home’s primary and backup heating system must be electric (electric furnace or baseboards).
  • The heat pump must meet FortisBC’s efficiency requirements:
    • Variable-speed mini-split: minimum 10 HSPF, 18 SEER
    • Variable-speed multi-split: minimum 9.5 HSPF, 16 SEER
    • Central system: minimum 8.5 HSPF, 15 SEER

Connected Thermostat Rebates

You can receive up to $150 for a new eligible connected thermostat when you have a central heating system (boiler, furnace, and/or heat pump) installed or serviced.

  • Residential FortisBC natural gas customers or municipal electricity customers in Grand Forks, Penticton, Summerland, or Nelson Hydro. 
  • If the property owner is not the utility account holder (such as a landlord/tenant situation), the account holder must complete the Utility Account Holder Consent form.
  • The home must be a year-round primary residence, at least 12 months old.
  • Eligible dwelling types: single-family detached, duplex, triplex, row home, townhouse, or mobile home on a permanent foundation.
  • The primary space heating system’s energy source must be provided by FortisBC, Summerland, Penticton, Nelson or Grand Forks.
  • Rebates cannot exceed the paid cost on the invoice.
  • Applications must be submitted within six months of the paid invoice date.
  • Only one connected thermostat rebate per home, and it must connect to the home’s primary space heating system (e.g. furnace, boiler, or heat pump).
  • The thermostat must be installed by a licensed contractor (with GST number and valid BC business license). Self-installation is not eligible.
  • Purchase and have the eligible thermostat installed. Knowledge HVAC & Refrigeration can handle installation to ensure eligibility.
  • Complete and submit the online rebate application within six months of the paid invoice date. Include:
    • Paid invoice showing all work performed, purchase date, model number and make. 
    • Cost of thermostat and installation
  • Keep copies of all paperwork. Rebates are subject to FortisBC review and payment methods noted on the FortisBC site.

Refrigeration Equipment Rebates

Save on upgrading to ENERGY STAR® display cases, controls and motor systems to help save energy costs. 

  • Anti-sweat heater humidistat controls for low temperature display cases: $40 per linear foot
  • Anti-sweat heater humidistat controls for medium temperature display cases: $40 per linear foot
  • Refrigerated display cases with doors (medium temperature, 0 to 5 °C): $115 per linear foot
  • Night covers for display cases: $30 per linear foot
  • Display case occupancy sensors: $1.50 per linear foot
  • Electronically commutated motor (ECM) replacements for evaporator fans: $75 per motor
  • Floating head pressure controls for condensing units: $175 per unit
  • Auto-closers for cooler or freezer doors: $75 per door
  • Evaporator fan controllers for walk-in coolers/freezers: $115 per controller
  • Vending machine controllers: $200 per controller
  • Must be a commercial, industrial, or agricultural customer of FortisBC electricity or a participating municipal utility (Grand Forks, Penticton, Summerland, Nelson Hydro).
  • Applicant must be the owner, long-term leaseholder, or builder/developer of the property.
  • Applications must be submitted within 365 days of purchase or installation.
  1. Purchase and install qualifying equipment through a participating supplier or contractor.
  2. Submit an online rebate application with:
    • FortisBC electricity or municipal account number
    • Your email address
    • Paid invoices showing make, model, and installation details
  3. Ensure all receipts are marked “paid,” clear, legible, itemized and indicate relevant information such as brand, model number and any other required information in your application.

Refrigeration Equipment Rebates for Non-Profit Organizations

FortisBC provides rebates to non-profit organizations, including charities and non-profit housing providers, to support the upgrade to high-efficiency refrigeration display cases, controls, and motor systems. These rebates aim to reduce energy consumption and operational costs.

Anti-Sweat Heater Humidistat Controls

  • Low temperature: $73 per linear foot of display case
    • Must control the anti-sweat heater load of reach-in doors, including heating elements in the door rail, glass, and frame
    • Must reduce anti-sweat heater run time by at least 50%
  • Medium temperature: $73 per linear foot of display case
    • Must control the anti-sweat heater load of reach-in doors, including heating elements in the door rail, glass, and frame
    • Must reduce anti-sweat heater run time by at least 80%

Refrigerated Display Cases

  • With doors (medium temperature, 0–5 °C): $115 per linear foot
    • Must replace a vertical model without doors
    • Must have a temperature of 0 to 5 °C
  • Night covers: $30 per linear foot
    • Night covers should not have been in use prior to rebate application
    • Must be applied for at least six hours in a 24-hour period

Refrigerated Display Case Occupancy Sensors

  • Low temperature: $1.50 per linear foot
    • Must use a motion sensor to activate a lighting control system that reduces permanently installed LED lighting to 20% or less when area is unoccupied
  • Medium temperature: $1.50 per linear foot

Electronically Commutated Motor (ECM) Systems

  • Low temperature: $75 per motor
    • All makes and models eligible
    • Entire motor replacement only
  • Medium temperature: $77.50 per motor

Floating Head Pressure Controls

  • Low temperature condensing unit: $175 per unit
    • Controls must have a programmed minimum saturation temperature of 21 °C or less
    • Compressor must be 1 hp or greater
  • Medium temperature condensing unit: $175 per unit
  • Low temperature remote condensing unit: $175 per unit
  • Medium temperature remote condensing unit: $175 per unit

Refrigeration Controls

  • Auto-closers for cooler and freezer doors: $75 per door
    • Must be installed on existing walk-in or reach-in coolers
  • Evaporator fan controllers for walk-in coolers and freezers: $115 per controller
    • Must reduce airflow when compressor is off and no refrigerant is flowing
    • Must reduce fan motor power by at least 75% during the compressor off cycle

Vending Machine Controllers

  • Vending machine controller: $200 per controller
    • Only retrofits of existing vending machines are eligible
    • Must be plugged into a standard refrigerated vending machine, not an ENERGY STAR® certified model
    • Must be capable of periodically powering up the vending machine to maintain product
    • Must power down compressor and lighting when surrounding area is unoccupied for 15 minutes or more
  • Must be a non-profit organization or charity providing services to income-qualified individuals or a housing provider that meets these criteria.
  • Must be a FortisBC electricity customer or a municipal electricity customer of Grand Forks, Penticton, Summerland, or Nelson Hydro.
  • You must be either the registered owner, long-term leaseholder, or property manager of the premises. Property managers can apply for rebates on behalf of owners if they have legal authority and permission to bind them to the terms and conditions.
  • Must submit rebate applications within six months of the purchase date and install the product within 180 days of submitting the application and supporting documentation.

    • Apply online through the FortisBC rebates portal
    • Provide the following information:
      • FortisBC electricity account number or municipal account number from Penticton, Summerland, Grand Forks, or Nelson Hydro

      • Ensure all receipts are marked “paid,” clear, legible, itemized and indicate relevant information such as brand, model number and any other required information in your application.

Commercial & Industrial Heating System Optimization Rebates

Lower the cost of optimizing existing gas heating equipment with rebates of up to 75% of project cost. 

Small Boilers

For small hot water boilers (retrofit only) or steam boilers up to 150 hp (up to 5000 MBH)

  • Economizer non-condensing: $10,000
  • Economizer condensing: $13,000
  • Combustion oxygen trim: $16,000
  • Parallel positioning: $9,000
  • Total dissolved solids (TDS) blowdown control: $4,000

Medium Boilers 

For medium hot water boiler (retrofit only) or steam boiler 151-299 hp (>5000 MBH up to 10000 MBH)

  • Economizer non-condensing: $16,000
  • Economizer condensing: $20,000
  • Combustion oxygen trim: $18,000
  • Parallel positioning: $10,000
  • TDS control: $4,000

Large Boilers 

For large hot water boilers (retrofit only) or steam boilers 300 hp and up (>10000 MBH)

  • Economizer non-condensing: $21,000
  • Economizer condensing: $25,000

For any size steam or hot water boiler (retrofit only)

Energy / heat recovery ventilators (HRV / ERV) — paid per CFM and tiered by efficiency and integration (examples)

  • Standalone/bolt-on HRV/ERV (65% per cent efficiency): $3.30 per CFM (Details: no existing recovery ventilator, system must have an existing integrated economizer)
  • Standalone/bolt-on HRV/ERV (75%): $3.70 per CFM
  • Standalone/bolt-on HRV/ERV (85%): $4.10 per CFM
  • Integrated HRV/ERV requires an existing economizer.
    • Integrated HRV/ERV (65% per cent efficiency): $2.10 per CFM
    • Integrated HRV/ERV (75%): $2.60 per CFM
    • Integrated HRV/ERV (85%): $2.85 per CFM

Hydronic additives: $300 per gallon.

 

Ozone laundry systems: $50 per pound of wash capacity, up to 75% of product cost.

 

Tune-Ups 

(Boilers and Furnaces/RTUs):

  • Boiler tune-ups (process, greenhouse, space heating, domestic hot water): $0.75 per MBH, up to 75% of project cost.
  • Furnace and rooftop unit tune-up: 100% of project cost, up to $400.
  • You must be a FortisBC gas customer (any rate class except Rate 1).
  • Applicant must be a property owner or long-term leaseholder of an existing building, or a builder/developer or property owner for new construction.
  • Your hot water or steam boilers must be used to meet your site or facility’s loads, e.g. process load, sanitization or space heating. Boilers installed to meet other operational needs (e.g. backup, standby or secondary boilers) are not eligible.
  • Hot water or steam boilers must be gas only.
  • Purchase or service date must be after December 19, 2024.
  • Applications and supporting documentation must be submitted no later than 365 days after purchase date shown on the paid invoice.
  • Retrofit-only combination offers are not available for new boiler systems or new construction.
  • Tune-ups must be completed by an approved technician like Knowledge HVAC & Refrigeration, not have been done in the previous 36 months, and equipment must be at least 36 months old.

Heating System Optimization Measures Eligibility:

  • Boilers: Must use gas, serve process load, sanitization, or space heating needs, and not be for backup or secondary use.
  • Hydronic additives: For buildings with hydronic primary heating systems and must be on the qualified product list.
  • Ozone laundry systems: Must transfer ozone into water through venturi injection or bubble diffusion and connect to both hot- and cold-water inlets of laundromat machines.
  • Heat recovery ventilators: Must be paired with an existing economizer and meet listed efficiency requirements.
  • Tune-ups: Must be performed by an approved technician, follow FortisBC boiler or furnace/ RTU tune-up checklists, only for equipment at least 36 months old, and not repeated within the last 36 months.
  1. Contact Knowledge HVAC & Refrigeration or another gas or mechanical contractor licensed with Technical Safety BC to perform the work. Some products may be eligible for instant rebates at point of sale via participating suppliers.
  2. If the product or service is not instant rebate eligible, complete the online Heating System Optimization Rebate application within 365 days of the purchase date. Include fully paid invoices showing make and model numbers and documentation of services performed.

Once approved, expect the rebate to be issued in approximately six to eight weeks.

Appliance Maintenance Program

Receive up to $150 in rebates when you have eligible appliances serviced by a licensed gas contractor.

  • Furnace or boiler service: $50 (maximum of one per household)
  • Indoor fireplace service: $25 (maximum of TWO per household)
  • Tankless water heater service: $50 (maximum of one per household; storage tank water heaters do not qualify)

The maximum combined rebate per household is $150 when a furnace or boiler, one tankless water heater, and up to two fireplaces are serviced.

  • You must be a residential FortisBC gas customer.
  • Your rebate application must be submitted within 60 days of your service invoice date.

Service must be performed by a licensed gas contractor.

  • Have your appliance(s) serviced according to the program requirements.
  • Apply online within 60 days of service with:
    • Your FortisBC gas account number:
    • Your email address
      • Scanned copies of all paid receipts
  • Rebates are applied as a bill credit. If you are not the account holder, a cheque will be mailed to the address listed on your application.
  • Applications may take up to 90 days to process.

CleanBC EV Charger Rebate Program

FortisBC offers rebates for installing Level 2 EV charging stations and necessary electrical infrastructure in multi-unit residential buildings (MURBs) and workplaces.

EV Ready Plan

  • For stratas or complex owners that hire a licensed contractor or engineer to create the plan: Up to 75 per cent of the costs of creating the plan, max $3,000
  • City of Kelowna top-up on EV Ready Plans: Up to $1,000
  • Building must be connected to a current electricity account with FortisBC or the municipal utilities of Grand Forks, Penticton, Summerland, or Nelson Hydro
  • Building must be constructed before August 31, 2021 (new construction not eligible)
  • Eligible Multi-Unit Residential Buildings (MURBs): Condominiums, high-rises, townhomes, and apartments with dedicated parking for residents
  • Eligible Workplaces: Must have 5+ employees primarily on-site with dedicated parking; premises may be owned or leased
  • Only costs incurred after pre-approval are eligible
  • Rebate applications must be submitted within six months of the pre-approval date
  1. When you have your documents ready, submit them via email to [email protected]. Be sure to include the following:
    • A copy of the EV Ready Plan that was created for your property. Make sure it meets the requirements.
    • A copy of the paid invoice from the electrical contractor and/or professional engineer for the costs (broken down by activities performed) to create the EV Ready Plan
    • The strata or complex’s legal name and address
    • The authorized representative’s full name, title and contact information
    • The mailing address where a rebate cheque should be sent
  2. After your application is reviewed, you will receive an email within 90 days indicating whether you’ve been approved to receive a rebate. Rebates will be issued as a cheque and sent to your mailing address.

EV Ready Infrastructure & Charger Rebates

  • Rebate: 50% of eligible costs, up to $600 per parking space; project maximum $120,000
  • Requirements:
    • Must have an approved EV Ready Plan
    • At least one parking space per dwelling unit must be EV Ready
    • Installed by a licensed electrical contractor
  • Eligible Costs Include: Engineering design, electrical and communication infrastructure, construction, permits, utility extensions, and EV parking signage
  • Rebate: 50% of eligible purchase and installation costs, up to $1,400 per station; application maximum $14,000
  • Requirements:
    • New, purchased in Canada (not leased or refurbished)
    • Permanent installation for new or expanded setups (not replacements)
    • Must be Level 2 (208V or 240V) with SAE J1772 plug head
    • Approved for sale in Canada (cUL, ULC, cETL, CSA, or CQPs certification)
    • Networked to a central system via standard protocols (OCPP, OpenADR, or proprietary)
    • Installed by a licensed electrical contractor
    • Dual-port stations count as two chargers
  • Amount: Up to $2,000 per charger (max $6,000 per project) or $200 per parking stall (max $10,000 per project)
  • Purpose: Additional funding for eligible EV infrastructure or charger installations in MURBs
  • Availability: Limited time, while funding lasts
  • Building must be connected to a current electricity account with FortisBC or the municipal utilities of Grand Forks, Penticton, Summerland, or Nelson Hydro
  • Building must be constructed before August 31, 2021 (new construction not eligible)
  • Eligible Multi-Unit Residential Buildings (MURBs): Condominiums, high-rises, townhomes, and apartments with dedicated parking for residents
  • Eligible Workplaces: Must have 5+ employees primarily on-site with dedicated parking; premises may be owned or leased
  • Only costs incurred after pre-approval are eligible
  • Rebate applications must be submitted within six months of the pre-approval date

    • If you installed charging stations as part of your project, additionally submit:
    • A screenshot of the back-end network operating system that shows that the charging stations are connected to the network
    • One image per station if multiple stations are part of your application
    • Allow up to 90 days for rebate processing

Standalone EV Charger Rebate (Home & Workplace)

FortisBC’s Home and Workplace EV Charging Program helps BC residents, companies, strata councils, and building managers save on the purchase and installation of eligible Level 2 EV charging stations.

  • Single-port stations count as one charger; dual-port stations count as two
  • Organizations with multiple sites can receive rebates for up to four sites
  • Rebate: 50% of eligible purchase and installation costs, up to $2,000 per station; max $14,000 per application
  • Requirements:
    • Purchased in Canada, new, permanent installation
    • For new or expanded installations (not replacements)
    • Approved for sale in Canada (cUL, ULC, cETL, CSA, or CQPs)
    • Level 2 (208V or 240V) with SAE J1772 plug
    • Networked to a central system (OCPP, OpenADR, or proprietary)
    • Installed by a licensed electrical contractor
  •  
  • Rebate: 50% of eligible purchase and installation costs, up to $2,000 per station; max $14,000 per application

EV Charging Stations for Homes

FortisBC, in collaboration with the Province of British Columbia and BC Hydro, provides rebates to support the installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in multi-unit residential buildings and workplaces. Eligible applicants can receive rebates to offset the costs associated with EV charging infrastructure.

  • Amount: Up to $350 per Level 2 EV charging station.
  • Coverage: The rebate covers 50% of the eligible purchase and installation costs, to a maximum of $350.

Customer and Home:

  • You must be a residential FortisBC electricity customer or a customer of Grand Forks, Penticton, Summerland, or Nelson Hydro.
  • The home must be a single-family detached home, a mobile home on a permanent foundation, or a side-by-side duplex (with individual meters) that is at least six months old (not new construction).
  • The home must have dedicated parking for residents.
  • Note: Residents of townhomes, condominiums, or apartment buildings should apply for the multi-unit residential buildings rebate.

Charging Station:

  • The charger must be a Level 2 (208V or 240V) station.
  • It must be new (not used or refurbished) and purchased (not leased) from a Canadian supplier.
  • The unit must be approved for sale and use in Canada (e.g., cUL, ULC, cETL, CSA, or CQPs certification).
  • The rebate does not cover charging infrastructure already required by building codes or strata bylaws.
  1. Purchase and install the eligible Level 2 EV charging station.
  2. Apply online within 90 days of the equipment installation date.
  3. You will need to submit copies of the following:
    • The paid, itemized receipt/invoice for the charging station (showing retailer, purchase date, price excluding tax, make, and model).
    • A completed and signed contractor installation form (if work was done by a licensed electrical contractor) and their paid, itemized invoice.
    • A copy of the paid invoice for any separate electrical inspection costs.
  • The rebate will be applied as a credit on your FortisBC electricity bill.
