Furnace stops working

Four Things to Check When Your Furnace Stops Working

Few things are more inconvenient than a furnace that stops working in the middle of winter. When that happens, you may wonder, “What should I do next?” Before you call for professional furnace repair, try these simple troubleshooting steps first.

1. Dirty Furnace Filters

If your furnace isn’t turning on, start by checking the air filter. A dirty filter can block airflow, forcing the system to work harder and potentially causing it to overheat or shut down.

To keep your furnace running efficiently, replace the filter every three months or as recommended by the manufacturer. A clean filter not only improves airflow and energy efficiency but also helps extend the life of your heating system and keeps your home comfortable.

2. Thermostat Problems

Sometimes the issue isn’t with your furnace but with the thermostat that controls it. If your furnace isn’t running, check that the thermostat is set to ‘Heat’ and that the temperature is at least a few degrees higher than the current room temperature.

If the thermostat display is blank, the batteries may be dead. Replace them and see if that resolves the problem. As a preventive measure, install fresh batteries once a year to avoid unexpected heating issues.

3. Make Sure the Furnace Has Power

It may sound simple, but make sure the furnace’s power switch is turned on. After maintenance or repairs, this switch can sometimes be left off. You’ll typically find it near or on the furnace itself.

Next, check your home’s circuit breaker panel to confirm that the breaker for the furnace hasn’t tripped. Also, ensure that the furnace’s front panel is securely attached. Many systems have a safety switch that prevents operation if the panel isn’t properly closed.

4. Inspect Air Ducts

If certain rooms in your home feel colder than others, the issue might be with your air ducts. Start by checking the dampers on your ducts to ensure they are fully open. Properly adjusted dampers help balance airflow throughout your home.

If some areas still remain cold, inspect any visible ductwork for gaps or disconnected sections. Seal any small openings with metal duct tape to prevent heat loss. If you suspect larger leaks or blockages, it’s best to call a professional for repair.
